It's Monday again...

The above quote makes me laugh and it is definitely my feeling most Mondays. For me Monday is typically a busy day in the office seeing patients. Tuesday and Friday are my days in surgery, which are the days I enjoy the most. I think this is true for all surgeons. We train for many years to become good at our craft which is using our hands (and our minds) to fix things. For me it's primarily shoulders and knees, and I look forward to days in the operating room. Some days I do the same surgery over and over while other days I may have all different procedures on my schedule. Either way is fine with me.  I am a subspecialist, and there are about 10-12 different operations I do on a regular basis. This allows the procedures to be very routine, especially after being in practice for 16 years, and this makes the O.R. a fun place to be. We listen to music, and when I work with my regular team, it's an absolute pleasure to spend a day in surgery no matter how busy it is. So...on Mondays, I am definitely "seeing Tuesday and dreaming about Friday"!

However, if not for Monday...and Wednesday and Thursday, I would not get my Tuesday and Friday fun. Days in the office are busy and can be stressful at times, but it's important to evaluate patients, make the diagnosis and decide if surgery is even necessary. The care in the office after surgery is critical as well. Even when I feel defeated before the day starts because my schedule is booked solid with 30 patients, I still try my best to stay motivated and provide the best care I can. I try to remember as I see patient number 27, and have to once again give a rotator cuff tear explanation, that it's the first time that person is hearing it even if it's the 15th time I am saying it that day!

I'm sure there are many jobs/careers that have good days and bad days. I think no matter what, Monday can be a tough day if it is the beginning of the work week. For me, I might enjoy Monday more if it was a surgery day, but since it's not, I try to just get through it and move on with my week. So hopefully if there are certain days or parts of your job which are more enjoyable than others, you can use those as motivation to get through the tougher days. On to Tuesday!!
