Our 4-legged friends are family too, and just as it’s nice to have short cuts and life hacks for our human families, it’s also nice to have some short cuts to help with our fur babies too. Zoe is our 10-year-old Pomeranian. Her favorite things are cookies and chicken jerky. With so many preservatives found in the bagged versions, we set out to find a healthier way to provide those treats. We bought a food dehydrator. Any kind of chicken will work for this, so buy what is on sale, pull the skin off of it, and slice it into small thin pieces, about 1/8 of inch thick. You can also sprinkle with rosemary for extra flavor. Place the pieces in the dehydrator, close the lid, and set the temperature to 135 degrees Fahrenheit. Since it gets hot, we typically set it on the garage floor, and walk away for the 4.5 hours it takes to finish.Zoe likes to stalk the machine. She will wait.............And wait.Once they are finished, she has to help herself......1 lb of chicken makes approximately 30 pieces of fresh and healthy chicken jerky. Let the jerky cool, and it can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
